A Proposed $33Million Dollar Road Project for 102nd
Ave in Seminole is a waste of Taxpayers Money.
News Update - After a
workshop on February 26th, county commissioners ordered staff to rethink the proposed $33
million plan to widen the roadway to four lanes from Seminole Boulevard west to Antilles
Drive.
December 2, 2007 - A group of
Seminole residents are trying to prevent the proposed widening of 102nd Avenue.
Save Our Neighborhood: Preserve 102, is fighting to get the attention of Pinellas County
commissioners by gaining signatures through its Web site http://www.preserve102.org
The Web site was set up by volunteers and officially launched on Dec. 2nd
At last count the signature count their "Petition to Designate 102nd Avenue North in
Seminole a Constrained Corridor" was more than 500, according to Marjorie Bulone, who
is leading the petition.
In addition to a link to the petition, the site offers a summary of the proposed $33
million project, frequently asked questions, recent news involving the proposed project.
Preserve 102 seeks to have 102nd Avenue designated as a constrained corridor from 113th
Street to Imperial Point, which would retain its current 2 lane status. Residents say
there is no need for expansion, since there is no additional growth taking place in
neighborhoods along the road way.
County officials are considering a final design that will use either a three- or four-lane
configuration. A decision on that aspect of the project will not be made for several
weeks.
The next time the commission meets on this issue it will be a public hearing and a
decision will be made whether or not to go forward with the recommendations of the
engineering firm.
The public hearing is expected to be held at sometime in late January. About a month later
it is expected to be on the commission agenda for a vote to move forward or not.
Marjorie Bulone said she has invited all county commissioners to tour the neighborhood and
has gotten responses from Karen Seel and Calvin Harris.
I was hoping to hear back from more commissioners but Im pleased two will have
had an opportunity to see what the area looks like and the unique features it has to
offer, Bulone said.
The Pinellas County Metropolitan Planning Organization 2025 Long Range Transportation Plan
includes 102nd Avenue as a four-lane divided roadway. Bike lanes and 5-foot wide sidewalks
on both sides of the roadway are included.
Design work on the first phase, a 1.2-mile stretch from 113th Street to 125th Street, is
scheduled for completion in the summer of 2009 with construction to begin in the spring of
2010.
Estimated cost of the first phase is $18.6 million, which would be paid for with the Penny
for Pinellas funds.
The second phase, from 125th Street west to Antilles Drive, is estimated at $13.2 million.
The third phase, a resurfacing project from Seminole Boulevard west to 113th Street, will
actually be completed within the next year or two. The cost on that portion is estimated
at $1.2 million. |
